The Ice Series prints are part of the Deep Ice, Deep Time project, focused on ice core science. Between 2008 and 2014, I created an assortment of etching and collograph plates, printed in a myriad of combinations – much like the infinite variety of ice crystal formations. They track the transformation of snow crystals to solid ice, and shift between scales. There are microscopic structures of firn ice, glacier forms, and satellite images of colossal ice sheets.
While absorbed in the fascinating patterns, I momentarily forget what inspired these images. I began looking at ice cores out of a concern for the environment and to learn about climate science. It required me to look deeply at the collective effects of our civilization on earths systems. Creating and organizing the structure and colors of icy worlds is a means of mourning and acceptance.
